Greenways

Welcome to Greenways! Our project to connect us all with green spaces within and around Penzance, Newlyn and Guval, and to help build more walking and cycling into our lives. Pick up one of the illustrated folded paper maps from local businesses and organisations around Penzance, Newlyn and Gulval, and scroll down for the online guides.

Greenway-circle@2x

With Penzance having the lowest car ownership levels in Cornwall, and also a whole network of footpaths that connect within and without, it felt only right that we did more to help people navigate around the place  without their car.

80% of journeys made by car locally are less than 5k too, those short journeys having some of the biggest impact in terms of air quality and carbon emissions. And an impact on our health. Active travel is a brilliant way to look after our body and mind, and connect with other people as well as nature.

So, when Harriet came to us with her amazing illustrated map, we were more than happy to work together. To shine a light on the amazing network of paths locally, some of them ancient, that we want to keep in use or bring back into use for future generations.

How it works

Download the maps and give it a go!

On the Penzance Greenways Map there is one loop walk within the town and five routes heading out of town.

There are four interconnected inner routes depicted on the Newlyn Greenways map. You can walk them one by one or join them together to make longer walks. There are also two circular walks that lead you out of Newlyn into the surrounding countryside and back again.

The Gulval Greenways Map depicts three walks stemming from the churchyard in the village. The routes follow hedge lined footpaths through the village and out into the fields and the woodland beyond. This map connects Gulval with Ludgvan, Tremenheere and Penzance.

There are audio guides to listen to as you walk, and an online map below where you can orientate while out and about, see where to hop on a Beryl Bike or get the bus back if you’ve had enough. You can also see where you can refill your water bottles.

TOP TIP:

Download these guides
first before setting out
on your walk

Download and get to know the info in these guides before you set off. You can use the Mobile Friendly Map* while out and about to navigate.

Map Agreement – Important Information: You walk at your own risk. All routes are existing public footpaths, public byways and rights of way. There are roads, some of them busy, that will need to be crossed with due care and attention. Please be aware that there are also some sections of the routes where you will need to walk on a road – please take great care. Please use the online map and walk guides to help orientate yourself while out and about. You can also join our walk sessions to walk the routes for the first time and build confidence.

*Please note that you need to be logged in to a Google account on your phone to be able to access this version of the map.

Get involved!

This August, we will be combining our Inner Loop Greenways walk with our Rewild PZ workshop! Rewild PZ creates a space for us to look at our near future (5-10 years) and think about what problems will we be facing and what solutions we want to see being put in place!

PZ Greenways x Rewild PZ: 28th August 2026 @ 10am

You can also join our map making workshops, where you can work with Harriet and the Sustainable PZ team to create your own walking map of the town, for the journeys you need to make. So that could be to work, the shops, the doctors, your friend’s house. Anything you like. Keep your eyes peeled for our next event:

Newlyn Greenways

Following the launch of Penzance Greenways we have now created the Newlyn Greenways map.

Newlyn is very hilly so you’ll notice that these routes all require some hill climbing but hopefully the views across the bay will make up for the incline! Each route also intersects with Chywoone Hill where you can find bus stops to help you shorten the walk by catching the bus down to Newlyn or up to Gwavas Estate.

Gulval Greenways

Each of the Gulval Greenways routes begins in the churchyard and meanders through the village to take you out into the surrounding countryside.

Bus stops are depicted on the map to show how you can link up with the public transport network and shorten your walk if you wish to.

Find out about other local organisations doing great work to look after the green spaces in our town and take care of our footpaths by heading to our Signposting page.
